What it is

Ace Storm puts up to sixteen players in one battle, as fighter pilots or as the crew of a battleship. Jets carry guns, lock-on missiles, and flares, and they fly where the mouse points, or by keyboard. Battleships are slow and heavily armed: a captain steers, and every crew member works a main turret and anti-aircraft guns.

Sessions run one of three modes. Team Battle is two fleets fighting for points, Free For All is every pilot alone, and Defend and Attack has one team protecting radar stations, a port, and a carrier while the other team tries to destroy them. Teams pick a country flag, and it goes on their aircraft and ships.

The two arenas are a volcanic island chain and a snowy mainland coast at dusk. The sky, ocean, terrain, clouds, aircraft, ships, and sound effects are all generated in code. Clouds are solid enough to fly through and to hide in, because they break missile locks.

The game takes the player's name from the Games Hub profile and saves lifetime kills, deaths, wins, and targets destroyed back to it.

Capabilities

Key features

USA, Russia, UK, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, and Canada, each with its own flag, colors, and aircraft shape.

A living ocean and sky

Rolling waves, a sun glitter path, shoreline foam, ship wakes, and clouds you can fly through.

Lifetime stats

Kills, deaths, wins, and targets destroyed follow a player through the Games Hub profile.

Under the hood

How it works

  1. 1An Express and Socket.IO server owns every aircraft, ship, bullet, and missile, and simulates each session 30 times a second.
  2. 2Browsers send only stick positions and triggers. They interpolate everyone else and predict the player's own jet with the same flight code the server runs.
  3. 3A Three.js client draws the world from code, and drops its graphics settings on its own if the frame rate falls. Sound effects are synthesized with Web Audio.
  4. 4Railway runs the game, which takes names from the Games Hub and reports lifetime stats to it.
