What it is

Turbo Dirt is a side-scrolling motocross racer for the Games Hub. Riders switch between four lanes, hold the throttle, and fire a turbo that heats the engine. At full heat the bike overheats and stalls, while blue cooling arrows reset the temperature.

Tracks mix bumps, kickers, tabletops, doubles, step-ups, and whoops. Leaning in the air to match the landing slope keeps the rider upright, and a clean downslope landing adds speed. Hay bales, wheelie flips, and rear-wheel contact can end in a crash, and mud patches slow the bike.

Six tracks, from Green Valley to Thunder Dome, each have their own theme, lap timers, and best race and best lap records. Modes include Time Trial, Vs CPU with three CPU riders, and Online Race with quick join or a private room code.

The pixel art, chiptune music, and sound effects are original and generated in code. The game takes the player's name from the Games Hub profile and reports coins and stats back to it.

Capabilities

Key features

Turbo and heat

Turbo adds speed but heats the engine, so racers balance boosting against overheating.

Ramp landings

Many ramp shapes reward a slope-matched landing and punish a bad one with a crash.

Six themed tracks

Day, desert, dusk, winter, night, and stadium tracks each keep their own lap and race records.

Three race modes

Time Trial, Vs CPU, and Online Race, where CPU riders fill the field to four.

Keyboard and gamepad

Both inputs work for racing and menus.

Under the hood

How it works

  1. 1A deterministic shared simulation handles tracks, physics, heat, landings, laps, and CPU riders in both the browser and the server.
  2. 2An Express and Socket.IO server owns the race clock, CPU riders, and lap and finish timing, validates human riders' reported state, and relays it at 20 Hz.
  3. 3The browser draws a 384 by 216 canvas scaled to whole pixels and synthesizes music and sound with Web Audio.
  4. 4Railway runs the game, which reports names, coins, and stats to the Games Hub.

Recent changes

Full changelog →
  1. Reworked the controls and rider collisions

Moved lanes to W and S and leaning to A and D, and made collisions crash the rider at fault with a short remount grace period.

  2. Fixed quitting to the menu

Quit to menu now works from the pause and results screens and leaves online rooms cleanly.

  3. Released Turbo Dirt

Launched the motocross racer with solo, CPU, and online races and added it to the Games Hub lobby.
